Orion 0.2 — Drone Fleet Management Platform

Project Background

Orion is a complex drone fleet management platform used to plan, control, and monitor drone missions in real time.

As Lead Product Designer / UX/UI Manager, I was the main person leading the UX and product thinking behind the Orion refresh. I led the user research, translated field feedback into product decisions, defined core workflows, and made many of the key UX and product decisions across the platform, while managing and guiding a junior designer.

My role went beyond interface design and included product-level decisions around workflows, feature behavior, prioritization, and how to simplify complex drone operations into a clearer user experience.

The work started with extensive user research with pilots, control room operators, security teams, QA, operations, and business stakeholders. The research revealed key usability gaps across the product, including visual overload, low readability, unclear alerts, complex mission creation, hard-to-scan drone information, limited stream control, and missing post-mission documentation.

Based on these findings, we redesigned key parts of the product experience: simplified complex workflows, improved visual hierarchy, strengthened critical actions and alerts, redesigned full features, added new capabilities, and created a clearer, more consistent product language.

The goal was to make Orion easier to understand, faster to operate, and more reliable for users working in real-time, mission-critical environments.

 

Alongside the UX/UI and product work, I created the product’s visual language in Figma, including the UI direction, illustrations, visual assets, and supporting graphic elements — shaping the experience from early concept to final design.

Geo Manager — Operational Area Management

A map-based tool for creating and managing operational areas directly on the live map, including geo-fences, no-fly zones, notification areas, and CLS zones.

As part of the Orion UX/UI refresh, we improved the area creation flow to make it clearer and more controlled. Operators can choose the area type, draw the shape on the map, name it, add a description, and immediately see the area in context.

The goal was to help users prepare missions faster, reduce ambiguity around restricted or

operational zones, and make spatial information easier to understand during live drone

operations.

Mission Planning

A redesigned mission creation flow that allows operators to define how a drone should fly, where it should stop, and what actions it should perform along the route.

As part of the Orion UX/UI refresh, we restructured the mission flow into clearer steps: choosing a mission type, drawing the route on the map, setting general mission parameters, and editing each waypoint individually.

This separation made the flow easier to understand and gave operators better control over both the full mission and each specific waypoint. The result is a clearer, more scalable mission planning experience that supports faster setup and reduces operational confusion before dispatch.

Flight Logs & Post-Mission Review

A new feature designed from scratch to help operators review and analyze completed drone missions.

Before this feature, Orion did not have a dedicated place for post-flight review. Based on user research, we identified the need for better mission documentation, flight history, reports, video review, and operational analysis.

We designed a structured workspace where users can search and filter past flights, open a specific mission, review flight details, watch related video, analyze map context, and generate reports.

The goal was to turn completed flights into useful operational knowledge — helping teams

understand what happened, investigate events, document findings, and improve future

missions.

Multi-Drone Operations

A redesigned operational workspace for monitoring and controlling multiple drones at the same time.

Before the redesign, Orion did not have a clear centralized way to view several drones together with their live operational data. Important information such as mission status, battery, signal, location, altitude, speed, dock connection, and video streams was harder to scan and compare across drones.

As part of the UX/UI refresh, we created a dedicated multi-drone panel that brings all active drones into one compact, scannable view. Each drone card shows key flight indicators, current status, and critical telemetry, while the live video streams remain visible on the map.

The goal was to give operators a clearer real-time picture of the fleet, reduce information overload, and make it easier to understand which drone needs attention during active operations.

Dock Management

A compact control and monitoring panel for the drone dock — the physical station where the drone is stored, charged, and prepared for missions.

The dock contains a large amount of operational data, including drone status, dock status,

temperature, charging, hatch state, camera/video, diagnostics, and remote actions. To

reduce overload, we organized the experience into three clear categories: Actions, Info, and

Diagnostics.

The result is a dense but scannable interface that gives operators quick access to critical dock information and controls, without taking over the map or interrupting the mission workflow.

Asset Managementning

A centralized management area for all operational assets in Orion, including drones, docks, airports, users, and related system entities.

This section was designed to give operators and admins one clear place to view, edit, and manage the resources that support drone operations. Instead of spreading asset settings across different areas of the product, we created a structured management experience with searchable lists, detail pages, edit states, roles, statuses, and clear actions.

The goal was to make complex system administration feel simpler, more organized, and easier to maintain — especially in a platform with multiple asset types, users, permissions, and operational environments.

Operational Alerts & Notifications

A redesigned alert and notification system for real-time drone operations.

Before the redesign, notifications in Orion were difficult to notice, hard to prioritize, and

created confusion during active missions. As part of the UX/UI refresh, we created a clearer

notification experience with a dedicated notification panel, toast messages, popups for

critical decisions, filtering options, severity colors, and contextual icons.

The goal was to help operators quickly understand what requires attention, distinguish

between critical and low-priority events, and respond faster during live operations.

Outcome

The Orion refresh was not just a visual update. It was a product-wide UX/UI improvement based on real user needs, operational feedback, and a deep understanding of the pain points users experienced in the field.

The result was a clearer, more scalable, and more reliable platform — one that users could finally operate with greater confidence. Alongside improving existing workflows, we also designed and added major new features that did not exist before, helping Orion become a more complete, usable, and field-ready operational product.
